Salary: USD 163,000 - 247,000 / annual
Gusto is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join the Tax Accounts team, responsible for managing the complexity of employer and employee tax account data across hundreds of tax agencies. This role operates across the full product lifecycle—frontend, backend APIs, data models, and automation—in a domain where correctness is non-negotiable.
Day-to-day responsibilities include designing and building systems for agency registrations, power-of-attorney authorizations, tax notices, and filings across jurisdictions; creating automation that maintains access with tax agencies on behalf of customers; modeling complex, jurisdiction-specific compliance rules into maintainable systems; and partnering with Product, Design, Tax Operations, and PEO teams to translate customer pain into solutions. You will mentor other engineers on the team and help solve some of the hardest problems at scale.
The ideal candidate has 8+ years of software development experience, with a track record of owning multi-quarter projects that solve complex engineering problems and deliver measurable customer impact. You should be comfortable designing data models and APIs for rules-heavy domains (compliance, tax, payments, or similar) where edge cases and correctness are critical. Experience leveraging AI tools to accelerate development, improve testing, and deliver new capabilities is important, along with curiosity about emerging AI frameworks and a habit of sharing best practices. Strong mentoring ability and cross-functional communication skills are essential.
Technical preferences include experience with Ruby on Rails, a collaborative test-driven environment, and the ability to write well-structured, maintainable, well-documented code.
