Shepherd is an AI-native commercial insurance platform transforming how high-hazard industries obtain coverage. The company focuses on automating underwriting workflows for complex construction projects, integrating real-time data from construction technology partners like Procore, Autodesk, and DroneDeploy to assess risk accurately and quickly. Shepherd recently closed a $42M Series B (March 2026, total funding $60M+) led by Intact Private Capital, with backing from Spark Capital, Y Combinator, and others.
As a Staff Software Engineer, you will lead major technical initiatives and own significant areas of Shepherd's product experience across verticals. You'll drive architectural decisions for your domain, work across the full stack (React/Next.js frontend, Node.js/Postgres backend, GraphQL APIs), and collaborate with product, design, underwriting, and actuarial teams. The role emphasizes end-to-end ownership from conception through release, shipping high-quality features frequently while maintaining technical excellence.
You will mentor other engineers as the team scales, contribute to product strategy and architectural decisions, and balance innovation with pragmatic delivery. The tech stack includes React, Next.js, TypeScript, GraphQL with Apollo, Node.js, Postgres, and Redis. This is a full-stack role requiring 8+ years of experience, ideally with a background in full-stack engineering and a track record of delivering high-impact products. Prior InsurTech or actuarial experience is valued. You should thrive in ambiguity, care about construction safety and productivity, communicate clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders, and hold strong opinions weakly.
