Robinhood is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to lead the design and evolution of identity, authentication, and authorization systems protecting the platform's financial infrastructure. The Security Engineering team owns authentication and authorization for both internal systems and customer-facing products, ensuring secure and reliable access at scale.
In this role, you will lead the technical direction of large-scale backend services, including a proprietary access management platform, and define secure patterns for emerging areas such as AI-driven workflows. You'll guide the design of systems managing authentication and authorization across internal services and customer applications, with responsibility for scaling proprietary systems to support high traffic and low-latency requirements. Work includes certificate lifecycle management, public key infrastructure systems, and developing secure access patterns and monitoring for AI and machine learning workflows.
You'll partner closely with infrastructure, product, and data engineering teams to integrate secure access controls into new and existing systems. This is a hands-on technical role requiring strong judgment, direct development contribution, and mentorship of other engineers while ensuring systems meet strict reliability and latency expectations.
The role is based in Bellevue, WA with in-person attendance expected at least 3 days per week. You'll work with a high-performing, fast-moving team where ethics and impact are central.
Required qualifications: 8+ years building backend or security systems with identity and access management at scale; experience with authentication protocols (OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, SAML, WebAuthn); strong programming skills in Go, Python, or Rust; experience operating distributed systems in Kubernetes and AWS; ability to design highly available systems with clear performance and reliability goals; comfort guiding technical decisions and supporting engineers through code reviews and design discussions.
