In this Staff Software Engineer role, you'll design, build, and maintain scalable Apex solutions on the Salesforce platform that directly impact how Gusto's sales and customer success teams operate. You'll work on high-scale systems, applying modern development practices and AI coding assistants (Claude Code or equivalent) throughout the development lifecycle—from writing and reviewing code to debugging and documentation.
Day-to-day responsibilities include:
- Designing and building scalable Apex solutions on Salesforce
- Using AI coding assistants fluently across the full development lifecycle
- Overseeing improvements to deployed features and measuring impact
- Applying Salesforce platform architecture and change/release management best practices with sf CLI
- Writing well-structured, maintainable, documented code
- Building, testing, and debugging reliable production systems at scale (real-time, event-driven, or high-throughput preferred)
- Contributing to codebases beyond Salesforce when needed
You'll bring 6+ years of professional software engineering experience, including 4+ years developing on Salesforce in Apex. Salesforce Platform Developer I and/or Application Architect certifications are required. You're fluent with AI coding assistants, comfortable with Salesforce platform architecture and sf CLI, and have a proven track record building reliable production systems. Experience in regulated industries is preferred. Ruby on Rails experience is a plus.

The role is hybrid, based in Denver, San Francisco, or New York, with expectations to work from the office 2-3 days per week. A two-day onboarding visit to a Gusto office is required. AI fluency is fundamental to how work gets done at Gusto, and all team members are expected to actively engage with AI tools relevant to their role.
