Discord is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join the Safety Processing team, which is responsible for identifying and removing harmful or illegal content from the platform. This role combines technical leadership with hands-on backend engineering to build scalable systems that protect millions of daily active users.
You will lead the design and development of backend systems for processing safety-related signals, primarily using Python. Your responsibilities include architecting scalable solutions, mentoring team members through complex system design challenges, and collaborating with cross-functional teams on content moderation tools and compliance efforts. You'll implement and enhance ML/AI models to improve automation in content moderation, build solutions with an adversarial mindset to anticipate safety challenges, and drive key workstreams while providing leadership to the team.
The ideal candidate has extensive Python expertise and a proven track record building and maintaining large-scale backend systems. You should demonstrate strong system design and architecture skills, with experience leading large-scale projects measured in quarters or years. Leadership in execution is critical—you'll define workstreams, lead projects, and guide other engineers through implementation. Experience in trust, safety, security, or privacy domains is essential, as is familiarity with 24/7 on-call rotations for production systems.
Bonus qualifications include experience with ML/AI in content moderation, TypeScript/JavaScript/React, Rust, or previous roles at companies with strong safety and trust focuses.
The position offers flexibility: Los Angeles-area candidates can work remotely, while San Francisco-area candidates are required in-office 2 days per week. Relocation assistance may be available for the Bay Area. This is a full-time, US-based role.
