IonQ is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join the Runtime Software team at its Oxford office. In this role, you will work directly with experimental scientists to implement real-time control system behaviors and provide the abstractions required for quantum experiments. You'll shape core Rust libraries and the execution environment that transforms hardware into a functional quantum computer, contributing to the development of fault-tolerant quantum systems. Key responsibilities include collaborating with scientists to understand requirements, interfacing with system orchestration, non-realtime control, and compiler teams to ensure seamless integration across the software architecture, and working with FPGA and electronics teams to shape overall system design. You will implement drivers for real-time devices, produce tooling to enable rapid iteration, and develop the execution environment for user programs running on quantum systems. The role involves developing abstractions over real-time control hardware to support nano-second level precision ion driving with reproducibility and scalability. You'll accelerate the science core and contribute directly to the execution model of quantum computers, supporting the mission to build utility-scale quantum systems. The position is based in Oxford with flexibility to work remotely a few days per week, and involves up to 5% travel.
