Squarespace is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to provide technical oversight and leadership for the revenue systems at the core of the company's monetization platform: billing, payments, and orders. This is an individual contributor technical leadership role reporting to the Director of Revenue Systems.
In this position, you will own the system architectural vision and design for critical areas of the business, transforming high-level strategic objectives into estimated project plans for initiatives central to Squarespace's core businesses. You will serve as a technical lead and cross-functional liaison on business-critical projects, making and defending engineering decisions that directly impact business success. A key responsibility is mentoring engineers on the team to deliver higher quality work with greater autonomy, while driving best practices for engineering excellence and technical leadership through code contributions, design reviews, and fostering shared understanding across the organization.
You will regularly collaborate with engineering leadership and key product, strategy, and finance stakeholders to align technical strategy with business objectives. You'll set the engineering quality bar for the team through consistent, high-quality code contributions across billing, orders, and payments systems.
Required qualifications include 10+ years of experience specifying, delivering, and maintaining complex distributed backend services. You should have significant experience with multiple programming languages (especially Java) and tools like Spring Boot, Hibernate, and databases. Demonstrated experience leading system architecture decisions across multiple teams or initiatives is essential, as is a proven ability to serve as a technical lead on cross-functional projects that align engineering and business goals without sacrificing engineering quality. Experience working with billing, orders, or payment systems at scale is highly valued.
This is a hybrid role based in the NYC office, requiring 3 days per week on-site.
