Salary: USD 163,000 - 247,000 / annual
Gusto is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to own and build the systems powering 401(k) offerings for tens of thousands of small businesses. This is a hands-on, full-stack role where you'll design, build, and maintain services and APIs end-to-end, ship production code, and evolve architecture to support future capabilities.
You'll work on the Core 401(k) team, responsible for making retirement plan management simple and compliant for small business owners. The team ensures companies don't have to navigate complex financial regulations and laws—you'll translate those requirements into reliable, scalable software that hundreds of thousands of people trust with their retirement savings.
Day-to-day responsibilities include designing and shipping 401(k) management services and features, identifying architectural improvements, codifying and evangelizing engineering best practices, partnering with product and operations teams to scope and deliver solutions, debugging production issues, improving reliability and observability, collaborating across engineering teams on integrations, and writing clear, well-tested code that scales.
You'll need 8+ years of production software engineering experience, strong expertise with services, APIs, and message-based systems (Sidekiq, SQS, etc.), experience with GraphQL and modern frontend frameworks like React, and comfort owning systems end-to-end including production support. Ruby on Rails or comparable backend framework experience is preferred. You should be pragmatic and execution-focused, comfortable influencing cross-functional teams, and a clear communicator.
Gusto has offices in Denver, San Francisco, and New York, with hybrid expectations of 2-3 days per week in-office for those locations. Remote work is available with a reliable internet connection.
