Swarm Aero is building the world's largest swarming UAV network and Command & Control software to coordinate thousands of heterogeneous autonomous aircraft. This Staff Software Engineer role focuses on architecting the backend systems that enable real-time coordination of drone swarms at unprecedented scale. You will help design and build the distributed, real-time infrastructure powering Legion's Command & Control platform—systems that allow a single operator to plan, direct, and execute missions across networked swarms of aircraft in real time, even over intermittent communications. This is not typical CRUD work; it requires expertise in real-time distributed systems, high-throughput telemetry pipelines, and novel infrastructure for a problem space with minimal prior art. Key responsibilities include architecting the C2 backend for heterogeneous aircraft swarms, building collaborative real-time infrastructure for simultaneous control of large numbers of aircraft with graceful degradation under poor connectivity, designing services to ingest and process dense vehicle telemetry and sensor data, owning backend features end-to-end from design through deployment, and shipping frequently with strong CI/CD and DevSecOps practices. You bring 6+ years of experience building complex backend systems with deep distributed systems expertise, strong instincts for reliability and performance at scale, and a track record operating production services. Ideal candidates have experience with real-time and event-driven systems, performance-sensitive high-throughput applications, messaging and streaming protocols, systems operating under degraded connectivity, and geospatial data applications. This is an early-stage role where you'll shape how humans command autonomous systems at scale, working directly on architecture with a small, world-class team from Scaled Composites, Airbus, Blue Origin, and Boom Supersonic. The company is Series A funded and moving quickly to launch novel aircraft and swarming networks. Note: ITAR compliance required—applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, or eligible to obtain required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
