Rula is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to lead the architecture and technical vision of its Revenue Cycle Management (RCM) Payments team. This is a pivotal role responsible for designing mission-critical systems that handle complex payments, claims submission, and revenue workflows at scale. You will architect distributed systems that serve as the backbone for Rula's business growth while partnering with product and clinical stakeholders to solve operational challenges.
The role combines technical leadership with hands-on engineering. You will mentor a talented team of engineers, drive a culture of technical excellence, and influence the broader engineering organization through code reviews, documentation, and knowledge sharing. You'll work with modern tech stacks including TypeScript, React, Node.js, Kafka, and AWS, with opportunities to leverage AI-assisted development tools to optimize velocity and code quality.
Rula is a remote-first mental healthcare company (Series C) focused on addiction treatment and broader mental health services. The company operates with a mission to destigmatize mental health and make evidence-based, compassionate care accessible. You'll be solving real problems in healthcare payments and claims—a domain that requires both technical sophistication and domain expertise in HIPAA compliance, financial systems, and healthcare operations.
Required: 8+ years of professional software development with proven experience designing and scaling complex distributed systems in production. Deep expertise in backend distributed architecture (microservices, event-driven systems) and full-stack capabilities. Demonstrated ability to lead high-priority cross-team technical initiatives from conception through delivery, including stakeholder management and navigating technical trade-offs. Proven mentorship and technical culture-building experience. Proficiency with AI-assisted development tools.
Preferred: Startup or growth-stage company experience. Hands-on expertise with Node.js, TypeScript, Kafka, AWS, and React. Domain knowledge or ability to rapidly master financial/healthcare systems, HIPAA compliance, and claims/payments workflows. High self-awareness and growth mindset.
