Anthropic is hiring a Staff Software Engineer to lead the design and execution of the secure execution environment that powers Claude's agentic capabilities. This team owns the infrastructure layer where Claude writes and runs code, browses the web, and interacts with external systems—operating at the intersection of systems engineering and security.
In this role, you will independently scope and drive complex, multi-month projects that shape how Anthropic builds and scales its products. You'll work across organizational boundaries to align stakeholders through ambiguous problem spaces, make architectural decisions that impact hundreds of thousands of companies and engineers, and partner directly with research teams to productize cutting-edge AI capabilities.
You'll take full ownership from design through deployment and operations, building containerized workload infrastructure that is safe, fast, and reliable enough that product teams don't need to think about the underlying complexity. The goal is to make untrusted code execution a solved problem at scale.
Ideal candidates have 8+ years of backend or platform engineering experience building scalable distributed systems, ideally at a tech lead level or equivalent. You should have strong fundamentals in service-oriented architectures, networking, and systems design, with hands-on experience owning foundational platform systems end-to-end. Proficiency in Python, Go, Rust, or similar systems languages is required, along with practical experience in cloud infrastructure (GCP, AWS, Azure), container orchestration (Kubernetes), and multi-cloud networking.
You thrive in ambiguity, make sound technical decisions independently, and have experience operating in both 0-to-1 and mature team settings. You approach platform work with a product mindset, caring deeply about building solutions that are robust, scalable, and easy to use. The company offers visa sponsorship and expects hybrid work with at least 25% office time, with preference given to candidates in NY, Seattle, SF, or the Bay Area.
