Astronomer is seeking a Staff-level Software Engineer to own and develop platform infrastructure strategy for Astro, the unified DataOps platform powered by Apache Airflow. This is a foundational technical role at a critical moment for the company, where your work will directly shape product capabilities over the next several years.
The Platform team builds the foundational systems that power Astronomer's complex, multi-cloud infrastructure serving 800+ enterprise customers. This is not a management role—you'll be deeply involved in both designing and building these systems. You'll own the platform infrastructure strategy with full responsibility for outcomes, make principled technology choices across the organization, and create comprehensive internal documentation and decision records.
Key responsibilities include: developing platform infrastructure strategy and owning outcomes; making build vs. buy assessments and advocating for the right tools; designing and building systems under load across multiple cloud providers; participating in architectural forums and driving principled decisions; and working effectively in a globally-distributed team.
You should bring: deep distributed systems knowledge grounded in production experience (consistency/availability tradeoffs, failure cascades, backpressure, graceful degradation); Kubernetes expertise at operator depth, including cluster operations under real load; strong Go proficiency with shipped production systems; multi-cloud architectural experience across AWS, GCP, and/or Azure; ability to define requirements and drive technology choices across engineering organizations; and strong written and verbal communication skills.
Bonus experience includes: storage primitives at the system level; SaaS/PaaS product experience across multiple cloud providers; and familiarity with Apache Airflow or workflow orchestration systems.
