SmithRx is a venture-backed healthtech company disrupting the Pharmacy Benefit Management (PBM) sector with a next-generation drug acquisition platform. The company has onboarded hundreds of thousands of members since 2016 and is rapidly scaling.
As a Staff Software Engineer on the Platform team, you will be a key technical leader responsible for the entire engineering lifecycle—design, documentation, build, test, and maintenance of the SmithRx product suite. You will advocate for best practices, coding standards, and large-scale system design, bringing leadership and ownership to the engineering organization.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design and develop back-end architecture and features using Golang, JavaScript/TypeScript, Node, GraphQL, and SQL
- Collaborate with stakeholders and technical leads to understand requirements and deliver scalable, high-quality software
- Create technical design documentation and provide scope/risk estimates for system builds
- Apply software development best practices, design patterns, testing, and automation
- Leverage AWS technologies (Lambda, Fargate) for job processing and batch operations
- Troubleshoot production issues, perform root cause analysis, and implement mitigation strategies
- Mentor and coach junior engineers through code reviews, design feedback, and technical guidance
- Partner with senior leadership to translate technical vision into quarterly roadmaps
- Foster a collaborative learning culture through mentorship and innovation
You bring 8-12 years of server-side software development experience, with expertise in compiled languages (Go, Java, or Kotlin) and relational databases (PostgreSQL). You have demonstrated success designing and implementing scalable APIs, understand design patterns and database design, and are proficient with testing best practices. Experience with GraphQL, CI/CD pipelines, AWS, Docker, and Kubernetes is a plus. You're a disciplined engineer who can work independently, forecast delivery accurately, and maintain a team-first, non-dogmatic attitude while remaining flexible and responsive to ambiguity.
