SandboxAQ is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to lead the Platform & Infrastructure team, which builds foundational cloud services supporting the company's Large Quantitative Models (LQMs) across life sciences, financial services, cybersecurity, and other sectors. The role is central to evolving architectural strategy, scaling core services globally, and elevating technical capabilities across the engineering organization.
You will lead architectural strategy by defining and executing the long-term vision for infrastructure, designing resilient distributed systems that support rapidly growing AI workloads. A key responsibility is mentoring and developing junior engineers, fostering a culture of high standards, code quality, and continuous learning. You will partner with engineering leads to diagnose complex technical bottlenecks, breaking down multifaceted infrastructure challenges using first principles into scalable, manageable requirements.
The role involves designing and implementing foundational platform services that improve developer experience and reduce operational overhead across engineering. You will collaborate cross-functionally with product, research, and security teams to ensure infrastructure is secure, performant, and aligned with the company's mission.
Required qualifications include 8+ years of professional software development with a proven track record designing and scaling complex distributed systems. You must have demonstrated experience leading high-impact engineering teams, including mentoring junior engineers and influencing technical strategy at a staff level. Expertise in cloud-native infrastructure (GCP preferred) and Kubernetes at scale is essential, along with deep knowledge of GPU/ML infrastructure for large training, data-generation, and inference workloads, including GPU scheduling, optimization, and high-performance networking. Strong ability to decompose complex technical problems into simplified, incremental, actionable architectural designs is required.
Highly desired skills include deep proficiency in architectural patterns for high-throughput, low-latency services; experience operating in high-growth environments where infrastructure requirements pivot rapidly; experience with multi-tenant systems, data governance, data registries, lineage, and federated access for model tuning in IP-sensitive environments; and experience in regulated/compliance-bound environments with data residency, export controls, SOC2, and strict isolation requirements.
