Peregrine Technologies, backed by leading Silicon Valley investors, provides an AI-enabled platform that transforms siloed data into operational intelligence for public safety organizations, government agencies, and private-sector institutions. The company serves hundreds of customers across 30+ states and two countries, reaching over 125 million people. The Platform team owns the foundational infrastructure that all product teams build upon. This role is a Staff Software Engineer position (with potential to level up to Principal) focused on leading the technical strategy for scaling Peregrine's cloud footprint. You'll drive initiatives that simultaneously improve performance, reliability, reduce infrastructure costs, strengthen security, and enhance developer experience. Key responsibilities include: designing and implementing systems to stand up new regions and customer environments with minimal manual work; building autoscaling and right-sizing systems that reduce cloud spend without sacrificing reliability headroom; strengthening reliability and incident response for mission-critical services; hardening network and platform security controls to meet public-sector compliance requirements; creating paved-road tooling that enables product teams to deploy, observe, and debug services independently; and partnering with the traffic engineering team on routing and load balancing at scale. This role blends hands-on technical leadership with cross-functional influence. You'll partner with product engineering teams to identify infrastructure bottlenecks, set technical direction for execution, mentor engineers, review designs, and build a culture of ownership and operational excellence. You'll also provide technical guidance to the traffic engineering team as the platform scales. Required qualifications: 8+ years building and operating cloud infrastructure at scale with direct ownership of platform, networking, or traffic systems; hands-on experience with major public cloud platforms, container orchestration, and infrastructure-as-code tooling; working knowledge of traffic engineering concepts (load balancing, service mesh, autoscaling, CDN/edge routing, capacity planning); proven track record of reducing cloud costs through architecture and tooling without compromising reliability; solid grounding in cloud and network security best practices with experience in compliance-driven environments; strong developer experience instincts; comfort operating systems under production load with on-call ownership; and willingness to work in-office in San Francisco.
