Salary: USD 218,025 - 256,500 / annual
Coinbase is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to own the design, implementation, and operation of authentication and authorization systems that secure customer access across all Coinbase products and integrations. You will work on foundational distributed services built in Go and gRPC, handling authentication, OAuth, sessions, tokens, 2FA, account recovery, and edge authorization at scale.
Key responsibilities include:
- End-to-end ownership of authentication and authorization capabilities, from technical design through production operation
- Building secure, low-latency services used across web, mobile, API, and partner platforms with strong observability and measurable SLOs
- Leading technical design for complex initiatives such as signed authorization tokens, passkeys, biometric recovery, device-aware authentication, and mobile OAuth flows
- Cross-functional collaboration with product, security, fraud, and infrastructure teams to balance customer conversion, account protection, regulatory compliance, and engineering constraints
- Creating self-service tooling and simplified integration patterns that enable product teams to safely adopt access capabilities at scale
- Mentoring engineers, conducting design reviews, and raising the technical bar through code reviews and on-call participation
Required qualifications:
- 8+ years of backend software engineering with strong Go or comparable systems language proficiency
- Demonstrated expertise designing secure APIs and understanding authentication/authorization standards (OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, JWTs, PKCE)
- Proficiency with gRPC, Protocol Buffers, and data stores like Redis or DynamoDB
- Strong operational instincts using metrics, logs, traces, alerts, and SLOs to run critical services
- Track record delivering complex cross-functional projects from design through production rollout
- Ability to use generative AI responsibly while maintaining human oversight
Coinbase is a remote-first company with quarterly in-person "surge" sessions. The role offers competitive compensation with base salary $218,025–$256,500 USD, plus equity and bonus eligibility.
