Shield AI is a venture-backed defense-tech company founded in 2015, developing autonomous systems and intelligent software for military and defense applications. The Hivemind Solutions Perception team is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to develop next-generation perception capabilities for autonomous platforms.
In this role, you will develop and deploy advanced machine learning models that enable autonomous systems to understand, reason about, and interact with their environment. You'll work at the intersection of cutting-edge AI research and production systems, building vision, vision-language (VLM), and vision-language-action (VLA) models that address core perception challenges including object understanding, scene interpretation, and mission-relevant environmental awareness.
Key responsibilities include:
- Designing and implementing data pipelines, supervised fine-tuning (SFT) workflows, and evaluation frameworks for perception models
- Building deployment infrastructure to transform AI research into reliable, mission-ready perception capabilities
- Partnering with machine learning researchers, autonomy engineers, perception engineers, and platform teams
- Translating emerging AI capabilities into production-ready systems for U.S. and international defense customers
- Solving practical challenges of deploying state-of-the-art AI systems on operational autonomous platforms
