GoFundMe is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join the Payments organization on the Payouts team. You will serve as a senior individual contributor responsible for building and scaling next-generation payments infrastructure capable of handling billions of dollars in transactions.
In this role, you will help bring core payments capabilities in-house, reducing reliance on external vendors and fintech partners for compliance and control reasons. You'll design and implement the end-to-end product lifecycle for payout solutions, from ideation through launch and iteration. Your responsibilities include refining and executing GoFundMe's multi-year payments strategy, owning critical technical decisions across ledgering, money movement, and disbursement, and anticipating future use cases to minimize the cost of future change.
You will collaborate with engineers, product management, designers, and external partners to create next-generation payments infrastructure. As a seasoned technical leader, you'll mentor other engineers through code review, pair programming, and architectural guidance. You'll lead projects from conception to completion, balancing technical trade-offs with business needs while communicating progress to stakeholders.
Required qualifications include 8+ years of experience in payment systems, with expertise in areas such as checkout/payment methods, payouts, ledgering, reconciliation, interchange, or KYC/onboarding. You should have a proven track record of architecting services using well-accepted design patterns, strong project leadership skills, and expertise in performance analysis and monitoring tools like New Relic and Sumo Logic.
Preferred experience includes Spring Boot, Kotlin, AWS, Kafka, Kubernetes, GraphQL, and relational databases such as MySQL or PostgreSQL. Prior experience on ledgering, payouts, or money-movement teams at scale is a plus.
