Salary: USD 275,000 - 377,000 / annual
Astronomer is seeking an experienced Staff Software Engineer to join its Observability team, which is building world-class data observability capabilities for the Astro platform—the industry-leading unified DataOps platform powered by Apache Airflow. The company serves over 800 leading enterprises globally.
In this role, you will lead the end-to-end architecture and evolution of major observability platform components, making foundational design decisions that shape the long-term direction of the platform. You'll build scalable, reliable, and performant features that provide visibility into customer data pipelines at some of the world's largest enterprises.
Key responsibilities include:
- Lead architecture and design of major platform components with long-term strategic impact
- Build and scale observability features for complex data pipelines
- Collaborate with product, design, and cross-functional engineering teams on high-impact initiatives
- Write high-quality, maintainable code following best practices in testing, CI/CD, and operational excellence
- Set and champion engineering standards across the team
- Lead complex production incident responses and drive long-term improvements
- Identify technical opportunities, risks, and gaps; drive initiatives to address them
- Mentor engineers of all levels through design reviews, pairing, and feedback
Required experience:
- Strong technical background building complex distributed systems
- Proficiency with Golang, Python, Kubernetes, SQL/OLAP databases, Kafka, and stream processing
- Hands-on experience designing, developing, and scaling production infrastructure
- Excellent collaboration and communication skills
- Ability to work in high-ambiguity environments and drive open-ended problems to completion
Bonus qualifications include experience building or scaling data observability products, familiarity with Apache Airflow or similar workflow orchestrators, background in observability/monitoring at scale (e.g., Datadog, Honeycomb), and direct product team collaboration experience.
