Affirm is reinventing credit to make it more honest and friendly, offering buy-now-pay-later solutions without hidden fees or compounding interest. The App Infrastructure team owns Affirm's shared mobile platform—the foundation every other mobile feature team builds on. This includes the design system, networking, observability, experimentation, CI/CD, app releases, developer tooling, and availability/stability. As a Staff Software Engineer, you will set technical strategy for your team on a year-long timescale and help execute critical, business-impacting projects. You'll collaborate across product development with product management, design, and analytics to ensure technical sustainability and manage risks and trade-offs. You act as a force-multiplier through defining and advocating for technical solutions and operational processes. You own your team's operations and availability by establishing monitoring, triage rotations, playbooks, policies, testing, and alerting to support on-call efforts. You foster a culture of quality and ownership by setting code review and design standards, advocating for them through writing and tech talks, and developing talent through feedback, guidance, and leading by example. Required: 7+ years developing and architecting mobile applications; 4+ years with React Native. Proficiency in JavaScript/TypeScript, hands-on React Native and Expo experience, authoring/migrating native modules. Experience with complex state management (Redux Toolkit a plus), React Native SDK major updates, debugging across JS↔native boundaries under New Architecture. Stay current on native OS releases and their React Native implications. Experience with mobile testing and observability tooling (Maestro/Appium, Sentry/Crashlytics, Statsig/LaunchDarkly) and building tooling others adopt. Proficiency with AI-assisted development (Claude Code or comparable agentic tools) with judgment on where agents help and where guardrails are needed. Proven track record driving teams to execute large projects, delivering major features, system components, or deprecating functionality through technical and execution planning. Write high-quality, easily understood code. Thrive in ambiguity, moving from low-level language idioms to large system architecture. Strong communication skills supporting global engineering collaboration. Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent practical experience required.
