Bitwarden is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to lead Android development for its identity security platform, trusted by millions of users worldwide. This is a fully remote role based in the U.S., reporting to the Engineering Manager of the Mobile team. You will serve as the technical authority on the Android codebase, setting direction and standards for the platform. Key responsibilities include designing and implementing complex, multi-quarter initiatives that span teams; owning resolution of the most challenging technical problems in the Android domain; establishing engineering standards through code reviews and mentorship; and driving architectural decisions in partnership with the Architecture team. You will act as a force multiplier for your team—unblocking engineers on hard problems, mentoring talent, and growing collective technical capability. You'll shape the Android technical vision and roadmap in partnership with product and design, thinking several quarters ahead. You'll identify risks and technical debt early, guide the breakdown of large initiatives into executable phases, and take a leadership role in hiring and technical interviews. Required expertise includes deep experience developing complex Android applications with Kotlin and Jetpack Compose, with a proven track record leading initiatives beyond individual features. You should have strong command of Android UI/UX design and architecture principles, experience setting technical standards and driving adoption, and familiarity with unit testing, UI testing, and snapshot testing. Experience with Android-specific components (Autofill Service, Accessibility Service) and Google Play testing tracks is valued. You bring proven ability to mentor and coach engineers, strength in navigating ambiguity, and ability to drive alignment across teams and stakeholders. Excellent written and verbal communication, collaborative mindset, and enthusiasm for open source and internet security are essential. Experience with generative AI coding platforms like Claude Code is a plus. Bitwarden is headquartered in Santa Barbara, California, with team members distributed globally. The company is dedicated to building a diverse and talented team and offers remote work with motivated, supportive colleagues.
