Samsara (NYSE: IOT) is the pioneer of the Connected Operations Cloud, a platform enabling organizations to harness IoT data for actionable insights across physical operations including agriculture, construction, field services, transportation, and manufacturing.
The Maps team builds the shared geospatial platform that powers location-aware features across Samsara's product suite. This team sources, ingests, enriches, and serves map data—from road networks and points of interest to addresses, boundaries, and customer-specific context. The platform supports vehicles, routes, sites, assets, and safety workflows, serving as foundational infrastructure for product teams building location-aware experiences.
As Staff Software Engineer, you will shape the technical direction of the Maps platform and work across the full geospatial stack: building data ingestion and processing pipelines, modeling and serving map data, improving map matching and routing foundations, and creating APIs that make spatial capabilities reusable company-wide. You'll work with a small team with broad ownership, ensuring the systems you build become foundational infrastructure.
Key responsibilities include: setting technical direction for the Maps teams; building geospatial systems and integrations supporting foundational features; scaling offerings to handle real-time storage, query, and computational load; consolidating team-specific solutions into platform-wide offerings; building agentic solutions for self-service data access; raising technical bar through code reviews, design discussions, and mentorship; partnering with engineering leadership on strategic bets; and representing Samsara externally in the mapping/geospatial ecosystem.
Minimum qualifications: Bachelor's in Computer Science/Engineering or equivalent; 8+ years building software with 2+ years in architect or technical leadership role; strong programming and design fundamentals; 4+ years on large-scale distributed systems; 4+ years leading technical projects across multiple teams.
Nice-to-have skills include GIS technologies (PostGIS, spatial SQL, GeoPandas, QGIS), geospatial data formats (GeoParquet, OpenStreetMap), and comfort working in ambiguity without formal authority.
