Apptronik is a human-centered robotics company developing AI-powered humanoid robots (Apollo) to support humanity across manufacturing, logistics, healthcare, and beyond. As a Staff Software Engineer on the Motion Control & Planning team, you will be a senior technical force multiplier responsible for raising the quality of the entire robotics control stack and driving technical direction across the company's most challenging problems.
Your scope spans whole-body control for both wheeled-base and biped platforms, learning-based hand control, mobile manipulation, and teleoperation systems. You will translate state-of-the-art model-based and learning-based control methods into robust, production-grade capability—from simulation through hardware validation and fleet deployment. Key responsibilities include architecting and improving the controls stack (algorithms, real-time performance, testing, maintainability), advancing whole-body coordination across platforms, flexing to high-impact problems across the stack, expanding the robot's performance envelope (speed, payload, reliability, safety), setting technical direction and influencing roadmap decisions, mentoring engineers, and collaborating cross-functionally with hardware, systems, and reinforcement learning teams.
You must have deep robotics fundamentals (kinematics, dynamics, state estimation, control theory, optimization), proven expertise in whole-body control techniques (WBC/OSC, QP-based control, MPC) for floating-base or mobile systems, hands-on experience with learning-based control and reinforcement learning in robotics, breadth across mobile manipulation, dexterity, and teleoperation, strong software engineering in real-time C++ and Python, and industry experience developing and validating production-grade controllers on physical hardware. Preferred qualifications include shipping controllers to production fleets at scale, dexterous in-hand manipulation, legged locomotion, and safety-critical software experience (ISO 13849, 10218, IEC 61508).
Required: MS or PhD in Robotics, CS, EE, ME, or related field (or equivalent); 8+ years of relevant industry experience in robot controls (or 4+ with a PhD) with a track record of getting controllers working on physical hardware.
