Salary: USD 210,000 - 234,000 / annual

Muon Space, a LEO satellite constellation provider founded in 2021, seeks a Staff Software Engineer to lead the flight software architecture and development for their orbiting satellites. This is a senior individual contributor role based in San Jose, CA, where you will set architectural direction and lead design, development, integration, and testing of embedded software and firmware running on Muon's satellite bus platform. Key responsibilities include architecting the satellite bus platform and embedded software environment for ARM Cortex-M CPUs; designing and implementing application, platform, and driver functionality; evaluating and selecting core technologies; building architectural patterns, shared libraries, and technical strategy documents; integrating compute and peripheral subsystems; collaborating with hardware teams on design and bring-up; aligning team roadmaps with product and mission requirements; defining success metrics; establishing test strategies; and mentoring senior engineers. You will be a leading member of the flight software team, responsible for enabling high-quality, high-velocity development through strong technical leadership and guidance. The role requires deep expertise in embedded systems, C/C++ programming, hardware integration, and the ability to read and understand hardware datasheets. Required qualifications: B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in computer science, electrical engineering, or related field; 10+ years as a software engineer in team environments; strong C/C++ programming with familiarity of other languages; experience integrating and controlling external hardware devices; excellent communication and presentation skills. Nice-to-have skills include flight software experience, Rust and Python, industry-standard data formats (ProtoBuf, YAML, JSON), embedded systems fundamentals (distributed architecture, resource-efficient design, low-level drivers, RTOS frameworks, I/O buses), Linux development environment familiarity, and experience with embedded Linux, FPGA, hardware design, RF systems, cloud infrastructure, or end-to-end product development.
