Anthropic's Environments organization builds and maintains the infrastructure that improves Claude's capabilities through reinforcement learning. This Staff Software Engineer role focuses on designing and operating the frameworks, APIs, and platform layers that enable researchers to build and run environments efficiently. You will design widely-used APIs and abstractions that other engineers and researchers build upon, making correct usage the default and preventing entire classes of errors structurally. Key responsibilities include owning platform layers beneath every environment (including the agent runtime), building tooling for environment owners to understand and debug production systems independently, and embedding with research teams on a rotational basis to work directly in their codebases without slowing research velocity. You'll anticipate and prevent silent failure modes through type safety, well-designed invariants, targeted testing, and refactors that reduce correctness issues. You'll drive adoption of new frameworks across the organization, including deprecations and cutovers, and help define engineering standards, review practices, and design patterns for the team while mentoring researchers and engineers. The ideal candidate has deep expertise in Python (including static typing, safe async/concurrency patterns, and performant code), refined taste in API and framework design with a track record of adoption, and experience designing or operating stateful concurrent/distributed systems. You should have a strong verification habit, experience working productively in large evolving codebases, and excellent communication skills with collaborators of varied backgrounds. Preferred experience includes building infrastructure for ML research or RL workflows, familiarity with agentic systems or LLM training pipelines, experience with agent frameworks and orchestration engines (checkpoint/restore, replay, coordination), and experience embedding with or consulting for other teams. This is a high-impact role shaping how Anthropic's research infrastructure evolves.
