Salary: USD 320,000 - 485,000 / annual

Anthropic is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join the Safeguards team, building safety and oversight mechanisms for AI systems. You will design and implement systems to monitor AI models, detect unwanted behaviors, prevent misuse, and ensure user well-being while enforcing terms of service and acceptable use policies. Key responsibilities include: - Develop monitoring systems to detect unwanted behaviors from API partners and take automated enforcement actions, surfacing findings in internal dashboards for analyst review - Deploy and operate monitoring systems across multiple cloud providers, including partner environments with data residency requirements, maintaining consistency through shared deployment pipelines, smoke tests, observability, and alerting - Design and harden sandboxed runtimes for AI agent execution, implementing isolation, network egress controls, least-privilege data access, audit logging, and insider-risk controls - Manage cost and capacity for large-scale, long-running agent workloads while establishing and meeting service-level objectives - Partner with engineers, researchers, security, privacy, and legal teams to enable rapid deployment of new detection capabilities on a trusted platform You will work on distributed systems infrastructure at scale, handling sensitive data with strict compliance requirements. The role requires strong technical depth in cloud infrastructure, containerization, and systems design, combined with the ability to communicate complex concepts to non-technical stakeholders. Requirements: - Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent professional experience - Proficiency in Python, distributed systems design, and Infrastructure as Code - Experience working across multiple cloud providers or building provider-agnostic infrastructure - Demonstrated experience building and operating large-scale distributed infrastructure (data platforms, control planes, job schedulers) - Experience with sandboxing and isolation technologies (containers, microVMs, network policy) or systems languages like Rust - Strong communication skills and ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences Strong candidates may also have: - 8+ years of software engineering experience - Experience building systems handling sensitive or regulated data with access control, auditability, retention, and data residency requirements - Production experience running LLM-based agents - Background in integrity, spam, fraud, or abuse detection and mitigation
