Join Deliveroo (now part of DoorDash) as a Staff Software Engineer on the Dev Environments team, part of the Foundations/Platform Engineering group. You'll be recognized as an expert in developer experience infrastructure, owning the local and remote development experience for over 5,000 engineers across DoorDash, Wolt, and Deliveroo.
Your core responsibilities include defining the architecture for how thousands of engineers develop and ship code—covering local and remote dev containers, remote IDE/VM lifecycle management, and the complete local-to-remote workflow. You'll build monorepo dev tooling at scale as part of consolidating companies under DoorDash's umbrella onto a unified global backend. The role involves provisioning production-shaped environments in seconds, keeping state synchronized over the network, and making remote machines feel local at thousands-of-concurrent-engineers scale.
A key focus is designing for AI agents as first-class environment consumers, not an afterthought—creating sandboxes that spin up on demand, run in parallel, and safely handle real repositories. You'll support agents launched from IDEs, CLIs, or Slack messages, enabling code review and shipping without requiring a laptop.
You'll set technical direction for the team's roadmap, unblock deep cross-cutting technical problems, and mentor senior and mid-level engineers. Collaboration is essential: you'll align teams across Security, Infrastructure, and Product Engineering around ambiguous, unstructured problems where no existing playbook exists. You'll help calibrate hiring standards, lead interview loops, and support onboarding of senior hires.
Essential qualifications include a track record of shipping production systems and leading cross-team initiatives with group-level impact. You need hands-on fluency with developer tooling languages (Go, Python, TypeScript) and infrastructure-as-code (Terraform). Experience managing compute via Kubernetes (multi-tenant isolation, autoscaling ephemeral workloads, cost management) or lightweight VM/sandbox technology (e.g., Firecracker) is required. You should have working knowledge of cloud networking, including secure and cost-effective traffic routing across network boundaries (VPNs, service meshes). Experience integrating LLM/AI tooling into developer workflows—such as Claude Code—both locally and remotely, is essential. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are critical for influencing senior stakeholders and aligning multiple non-adjacent teams without formal authority.
Nice-to-have experience includes developer platforms, devcontainers, remote development, remote IDE backends, JetBrains remote-backend flows, Codespaces/Codeserver-style products, remote build/execution systems (e.g., BuildBuddy), or large-scale build caching.
