Okta's Data Platform team is seeking an experienced Staff Software Engineer to design, build, and deploy foundational data infrastructure that powers streaming analytics, interactive reporting, and ML capabilities across the organization. You will own high-performance, scalable platform components built on modern technologies including Kinesis, Flink, Elasticsearch, and Snowflake, working with engineering teams to solve complex distributed systems challenges at scale.
Key responsibilities include designing and implementing data-intensive platform components, collaborating with architects and cross-functional partners on system design and implementation, conducting design and code reviews, mentoring engineers to scale the organization, and debugging production issues across the stack. This role has significant organizational impact, with a directive from engineering leadership to establish Okta as a leader in data and machine learning for security.
Required qualifications: 8+ years of object-oriented programming (preferably Java), hands-on experience with cloud-based distributed computing technologies (Kinesis, Kafka, Flink, Spark, Beam, Snowflake, Hadoop), proven ability developing and tuning highly scalable distributed systems, strong grasp of software engineering principles, solid understanding of multithreading/garbage collection/memory management, and experience with reliability engineering (data quality, observability, incident management).
Nice-to-have skills include experience with security/encryption/identity infrastructure, major public cloud providers, petabyte-scale data integration, high-volume distributed systems (Kafka, Hadoop), and Kubernetes on AWS.
