Okta's Core Engineering team is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to design, develop, and evolve shared infrastructure and services that form the foundation for the entire engineering organization. This role focuses on building cloud-native systems including search, caching, configuration management, async job frameworks, and email pipelines—all serving 15,800+ customers and 200+ million registered users.
You will work on a modern tech stack (Redis, Elasticsearch, Docker, Terraform on AWS) and drive the evaluation, development, and rollout of new microservices. Key responsibilities include designing and implementing cloud-based infrastructure projects, operating and scaling shared services as Okta's business grows, conducting design and code reviews to maintain high programming standards, and mentoring new engineering hires.
The role requires deep expertise in architecting and debugging large-scale cloud deployments. You'll collaborate across engineering teams, architects, QA, product owners, security, and operations engineers. The team operates with a weekly release cycle and individual ownership model, emphasizing speed, creativity, and technical excellence.
Required qualifications: 7+ years of backend programming experience in object-oriented languages (Java preferred) with strong understanding of multithreading, garbage collection, and memory management; 4+ years working with relational databases (MySQL or equivalent); proficiency with REST APIs, Spring/Spring Boot, Hibernate, Tomcat, AWS, Redis, Elasticsearch, and Docker. Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent required. Experience with enterprise SaaS and familiarity with network security, authentication, and authorization are valued.
