Salary: USD 228,000 - 252,000 / annual
Muon Space, a LEO satellite constellation provider founded in 2021, seeks a Staff Software Engineer to join the flight software team. You will design, develop, integrate, and test the software and firmware running on orbiting satellites, serving as a technical leader across the organization.
Key responsibilities include:
- Serve as an integral member of the team defining and building Muon's satellite bus and payload platform
- Translate concepts and requirements into design and working implementations, supporting through to on-orbit operations
- Design, bring up, and support the embedded software environment for satellite flight systems and peripherals using ARM Cortex-M CPUs
- Participate in evaluating and selecting technologies for the software foundation
- Provide technical leadership to key projects, organizing cross-functional teams to deliver mission-critical capabilities
- Develop application, platform, and driver functionality in the flight software environment and mentor others
- Integrate compute and peripheral subsystems in both software and hardware
- Develop technical strategy documents for the organization, including architectural patterns, shared libraries, and common services
- Collaborate with hardware team members on design and bring-up of Muon hardware
- Collaborate with software team members to set flight software architecture, select infrastructure and tools, and communicate with cloud backends
- Participate in developing software and hardware-in-the-loop test strategies
This role may be remote or located at headquarters in San Jose, California. The position requires access to export-controlled information and a current TS security clearance.
Qualifications:
- B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in computer science, electrical engineering, or related field
- 7+ years experience as a software engineer in a team environment
- Strong C/C++ programming with practical familiarity of other languages
- Great embedded systems fundamentals: resource-efficient design, low-level drivers, bit manipulation, responsive software and IRQ handling, RTOS frameworks, I/O and communication buses
- Integration and control of external hardware devices
- Ability to read and understand hardware data sheets
- Excellent communication and presentation skills
- Experience working on government/defense projects
- Current TS security clearance (required)
Nice-to-have skills: flight software or related domain experience, knowledge of industry-standard data formats (ProtoBuf, YAML, JSON), Rust and Python experience, familiarity with Linux-based development environments, experience with embedded Linux, FPGA, hardware design, RF communication systems, or network architecture, and end-to-end development from product concept to delivery.
