Anthropic is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to build and maintain Claude Code, an AI-powered agentic coding tool for developers. You'll design and develop scalable features and infrastructure that leverage advanced LLM capabilities like tool-use, chaining, and orchestration patterns to enhance developer productivity.
Key responsibilities include designing and building AI-powered development tools, engaging directly with developers to gather insights and improve user experience, collaborating with researchers to enhance model capabilities through shared tools and evaluations, and staying current with advancements in AI-assisted coding. You'll contribute across the full stack—from React-based front-end UI to back-end infrastructure—developing new features, fixing bugs, and optimizing performance. The role involves working with diverse technologies including Python notebooks, VS Code plugins, containerized environments, and cloud infrastructure.
You should have 6+ years of software engineering experience with deep expertise in React development, including performance optimization, modern patterns (hooks, context, suspense), and component architecture. Strong candidates have hands-on experience with large language models and prompt engineering, experience building and maintaining developer tools, and familiarity with CLI tools, large codebases, container orchestration, TypeScript scaling, and alternate JavaScript runtimes. Experience with projects requiring stringent safety, security, and compliance requirements is valued. A genuine passion for AI-assisted coding as a tool to enhance (not replace) human ingenuity, combined with curiosity about AI research and concern for societal impacts, is essential.
