Gusto is hiring a Staff Software Engineer to join its fast-growing Business Insurance team in New York. You'll design, build, and deploy core insurance products and AI-powered experiences that help small business owners discover, evaluate, and purchase P&C insurance (Workers' Compensation, General Liability) and PEO services.
Day-to-day responsibilities include designing and implementing reliable, scalable insurance products; building innovative AI-powered customer experiences; iterating rapidly based on live metrics and feedback; partnering with product, design, and cross-functional teams to refine scope and ship end-to-end experiences; and mentoring engineers on the team through pairing, code review, and knowledge sharing.
You'll need 8+ years of software development experience with 2+ years building customer-facing products at scale. The ideal candidate has an AI-native mindset, proven ability to deliver multi-quarter projects from scoping through launch, strong platform and application engineering skills (services, APIs, data flows, observability), and excellent communication abilities to articulate technical tradeoffs to both technical and non-technical audiences. Experience with Ruby on Rails, Python, and production AI solutions is a plus.
