Gusto is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join the Benefits Renewals team in New York City. The role focuses on building full-stack solutions that guide employers and employees through annual benefits renewal workflows, helping them stay compliant and maintain appropriate coverage. Day-to-day responsibilities include designing, building, and testing products across the benefits domain; mentoring other engineers on complex technical problems at scale; helping scale one of the world's largest Ruby/Rails and JavaScript/React applications; and collaborating cross-functionally with Product Management, Data, Design, and Platform Engineering teams to understand customer pain points and launch solutions. The ideal candidate brings 8+ years of software development experience, with a track record of owning multi-quarter projects that solve complex engineering problems and deliver measurable customer impact at scale. You should have experience driving large cross-functional projects end-to-end through ambiguity—scoping, sequencing, and unblocking without pre-broken-down problems—and aligning multiple stakeholders across teams. Experience with A/B testing and experimentation is expected. Strong mentoring abilities are essential, as you'll guide engineers to maximize their performance and impact. Experience with or interest in Ruby on Rails is preferred. You should appreciate collaborative, test-driven environments and be able to write well-structured, maintainable, well-documented code while communicating effectively across engineering teams and business stakeholders. The role requires leveraging AI tools and systems to accelerate development, improve testing, and deliver new capabilities. Curiosity and experimentation with emerging AI frameworks, along with the ability to apply and share best practices for safe, scaled AI use across teams, are important. Travel to Gusto's office for onboarding is required. Employees based in New York will be expected to work from the office approximately 2-3 days per week. Gusto offers competitive base pay, benefits, and equity (RSUs) for all full-time employees.
