Affirm is reinventing credit to make it more honest and friendly, offering buy-now-pay-later solutions without hidden fees or compounding interest. The Identity team at Affirm is mission-critical, serving as the foundation of the customer journey and global expansion strategy. The International Expansion Unit (IEU) owns Identity for all markets outside North America, placing this team at the center of Affirm's global strategy. As a Staff Software Engineer, Backend, you will set technical strategy for your team on a year-long horizon and help execute critical, business-impacting projects. You'll collaborate across product development with product management, design, and analytics to ensure technical sustainability and manage risks and trade-offs. You'll act as a force-multiplier through defining and advocating for technical solutions and operational processes. You'll take ownership of your team's operations and availability by establishing monitoring, triage rotations, playbooks, policies, testing, and alerting to support on-call efforts. You'll foster a culture of quality and ownership by setting code review and design standards, advocating for them across teams, and developing talent through feedback, guidance, and leading by example. The role requires 8+ years designing, developing, and launching backend systems at scale using Python or Kotlin. You'll have an extensive track record with highly available distributed systems using AWS, MySQL, Spark, and Kubernetes. You should have delivered major features, system components, or deprecations through technical and execution planning, writing high-quality, easily understood code. You thrive in ambiguity, moving fluidly from low-level language idioms to large-system architecture. Your growth trajectory demonstrates mastery of gathering and iterating on feedback from engineering and cross-functional peers. Strong verbal and written communication skills support effective collaboration with the global engineering team.
