Affirm is reinventing credit to make it more honest and friendly. This Staff Software Engineer role leads the backend engineering strategy for Affirm's card products across the EU, with teams based in Spain and Poland.
You will own the technical architecture and strategy for all card systems in the EU region, responsible for both real-time transaction processing (millisecond-level latency) and post-transaction ledgering and reconciliation systems. This is complex, high-impact engineering work at the intersection of payments infrastructure.
Key responsibilities include:
- Setting technical strategy on a year-long horizon and aligning the team on critical, business-impacting projects
- Serving as the lead engineer for all EU card systems
- Collaborating across product, design, and analytics to ensure technical sustainability and manage risks and trade-offs
- Acting as a force-multiplier through definition and advocacy of technical solutions and operational processes
- Owning team operations and availability through monitoring, on-call rotations, playbooks, testing, and alerting
- Fostering a culture of quality and ownership by setting code review and design standards
- Developing talent on your team through feedback, guidance, and leading by example
- Participating in on-call rotation as required
You bring 8+ years of software engineering experience with proficiency in backend systems at scale (Python, Kotlin, AWS, MySQL, Kubernetes) and frontend development. You excel at delivering major features and system components through clear technical and execution planning. You write high-quality, understandable code and thrive in ambiguity, moving fluidly from low-level language details to large system architecture. You have demonstrated growth through gathering and iterating on feedback from peers, and you communicate effectively across global engineering teams.
