Affirm is reinventing credit to make it more honest and friendly, offering buy-now-pay-later solutions without hidden fees or compounding interest. This Staff Software Engineer role leads the backend engineering strategy for Affirm's card products across the EU, with primary responsibility for architecture and technical direction across the cards domain.
You will set technical strategy on a year-long timescale and own the execution of critical, business-impacting projects. As the lead backend engineer for all cards in the EU, you'll collaborate across product management, design, and analytics to ensure technical sustainability and manage risks and trade-offs. You'll act as a force-multiplier for your team through defining and advocating for technical solutions and operational processes.
Key responsibilities include owning your team's operations and availability by establishing monitoring, triage rotations, playbooks, policies, testing, and alerting. You'll foster a culture of quality and ownership by setting code review and design standards, advocating for them across the organization, and developing talent through feedback and mentorship.
You'll work across multiple technology stacks, from just-in-time transaction processing (millisecond-scale) to ledgering and reconciliation systems in post-transaction processing. This is complex, experimental engineering work at the intersection of payments infrastructure and financial systems.
Required: 8+ years as a software engineer with proficiency in backend systems at scale (Python, Kotlin, AWS, MySQL, Kubernetes) and frontend development. You should have delivered major features or system components through technical planning and execution, write high-quality code, thrive in ambiguity, and demonstrate strong communication skills for global collaboration.
