Anthropic is seeking experienced, product-minded backend engineers to own critical systems powering Claude's API, Claude Code, and Claude.ai platforms. You will independently scope and lead complex, multi-month projects through ambiguous problem spaces, driving alignment across product, engineering peers, and research teams. Your work will directly impact the reliability and scalability of systems serving hundreds of thousands of global users.
The role offers placement across multiple high-impact backend teams based on your interests and experience:
**Platform Intelligence**: Build and scale the foundation of the Claude API, owning performance, reliability, and efficiency of the core serving path. Partner with inference and safeguards teams to optimize the full stack.
**Platform Serving**: Enable Claude to access and understand relevant knowledge at the right time. Build secure systems for developers to give Claude access to their data with automatic retrieval of relevant information. Collaborate with research on state-of-the-art retrieval advancements.
**Developer Experience**: Create products and tools enabling developers to build successful, reliable applications with LLMs. Build tools accelerating developers from idea to deployment, leveraging Claude to improve API usage patterns.
**Agentic Systems**: Build infrastructure and APIs for powerful agentic applications on the Claude API, including Claude Managed Agents. Own primitives like tool use, multi-step reasoning, durable sessions, and long-running task execution for enterprise adoption.
**Auth & Identity**: Develop critical infrastructure for identity and authentication across Anthropic's product suite. Create scalable solutions for user authentication, authorization, RBAC, and SSO serving as the backbone of identity management.
**Platform Distribution**: Transform how and where the Claude API deploys. Make it a cloud-native, managed product running cross-cloud and on Anthropic infrastructure with enterprise-grade security and compliance.
**Enterprise Foundations**: Build foundational systems enabling large organizations to deploy Claude at scale—user and permissions management, security and compliance features, and analytics infrastructure that converts product-market fit into revenue.
You will make architectural decisions affecting system reliability and scalability, design processes enabling effective team operations, and remain hands-on with code and models.
