Tempus is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to lead the design and development of Java/Spring and React platforms powering precision genomics and clinical reporting products. This is a hands-on technical leadership role where you will set technical direction across multiple services, raise the engineering bar through design reviews and mentorship, and partner directly with scientific and clinical domain experts.
Key responsibilities include architecting and enhancing Java/Spring and React applications supporting scientific workflows for variant identification, curation, ranking, and clinical reporting. You will design and own data models, APIs, and search/query strategies that enable fast, precise filtering and retrieval of large-scale genomic variant data at scale. Working closely with scientific and clinical subject matter experts, you'll translate complex domain requirements into clear, well-scoped technical designs.
You will lead the design and development of scalable, maintainable, and secure solutions, driving alignment on technical direction across teams through design documents and architecture reviews. You'll troubleshoot complex production issues across the stack, resolve root causes, and measurably improve system reliability, observability, and performance. The role includes advocating for best practices in software engineering, code quality, automated testing, and CI/CD, as well as effectively using AI-assisted development tools to accelerate delivery.
Required qualifications include a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field (or equivalent work experience), plus 8+ years in software engineering with a focus on full-stack application development. You must have proven leadership experience with the ability to lead by example and mentor engineers. Strong expertise in cloud-based solutions, service-oriented architectures, and RESTful API design is essential. Experience with search and query technologies (OpenSearch/Elasticsearch), relational databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL), and NoSQL technologies is required. Excellent problem-solving and communication skills are critical, particularly the ability to articulate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
Preferred qualifications include a Master's degree and experience with scientific, genomics, or healthcare-related applications. Cloud-native application design and deployment experience on AWS, Azure, or GCP is a plus.
