Salary: USD 175,000 - 225,000 / annual
Rebuy is a fully remote commerce platform that powers intelligent, personalized shopping experiences for fast-growing DTC brands like Tecovas, Momofuku, Dime Beauty, Liquid Death, Magic Spoon, and OLLY. You'll join a small, high-autonomy engineering team owning Checkout, Post-Purchase, Smart Flows, and A/B Testing—the surfaces and tools that run inside Shopify's checkout and post-purchase pages, plus merchant-facing experimentation tools.
In this Staff-level role, you'll drive technical decisions and migrations end-to-end across multiple systems. Key responsibilities include:
• Own Shopify checkout and post-purchase features: build and maintain extensions that render Rebuy offers inside Shopify's checkout, thank-you, customer-account, and post-purchase surfaces, plus the server-side code that decides what they show. Work within Shopify's strict constraints: bundle size, sandboxed APIs, and review requirements.
• Rebuild experimentation reporting: design the data model, PHP and TypeScript endpoints, and BigQuery/MySQL queries so merchants can see what an experiment actually did. Ensure reporting accuracy.
• Build robust REST APIs: design and implement secure, well-structured REST APIs in PHP and TypeScript that serve extensions, admin, and Shopify integrations.
• Keep production healthy: investigate merchant-reported issues, find root causes, fix them, and improve logging and metrics. Rotate on-call.
• Work AI-first: be fluent with Anthropic's Claude Code across development, review, and testing. Know what you can accomplish with it and where your own judgment matters.
• Do your own QA: test what you build in unit and end-to-end suites and by hand against real Shopify stores. No hand-off to QA.
• Look beyond your ticket: review code and weigh in on technical decisions outside your immediate surfaces, mentor by example, and help route ad hoc requests through proper prioritization.
Tech stack: React, Preact, TypeScript, Next.js, Vue, Shopify Checkout Extensibility, GraphQL; PHP 8 with CodeIgniter 4, REST APIs, TypeScript on Bun, MySQL, Redis, BigQuery, Google Cloud (GKE, Cloud SQL), Rust compiled to WebAssembly.
REQUIREMENTS:
• Proven track record operating with Staff-level ownership: minimal spec, driving technical decisions or migrations end-to-end across multiple systems or teams, influencing engineering decisions outside your own team.
• Fluent daily use of AI coding tools with judgment to distinguish plausible from correct results.
• Strong troubleshooting in unfamiliar codebases; can trace stack traces or failing tests to root cause in TypeScript or PHP without guidance.
• 8+ years building production web applications with hands-on experience shipping and maintaining both PHP (CodeIgniter 4 or comparable MVC framework) and TypeScript with React.
• Experience owning a revenue-critical, customer-facing system in production: reading logs and metrics, triaging escalations, following incidents through to fix.
• Hands-on experience with BigQuery on Google Cloud or another columnar warehouse, including analytical queries and cost awareness; comfort with MySQL schema design and migrations.
• Testing discipline across unit and end-to-end suites; habit of doing your own QA.
• Solid understanding of secure coding fundamentals for systems handling buyer and order data, including OWASP Top 10.
• Track record with orchestration and building platform-wide, componentized systems.
• Strong fit for remote-first, high-autonomy culture: fast, present, responsive on Slack during working hours.
• Educational background in CS/Engineering or equivalent experience.
PREFERRED:
• Shopify app development, especially Checkout Extensibility, post-purchase extensions, or Admin and Storefront GraphQL APIs.
• Experience in another tightly constrained runtime (e.g., React Native).
• Preact experience.
• Comfort moving between Kanban and Sprint-based workflows.
