Salary: USD 200,000 - 275,000 / annual

We are seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join our core engineering teams in Washington, D.C. This is a hands-on technical leadership role that combines people management with deep technical execution. You will develop and mentor a high-performing engineering team, guide them through complex technical challenges, and ensure alignment with business priorities. The ideal candidate balances mentorship and team development while maintaining high standards in technical execution and shipping production-grade software.
You will drive impactful projects that deliver real value to customers—from supporting emergency responders during natural disasters to addressing complex organized crime investigations. You'll work cross-functionally with design and product management to build robust, scalable, user-centered systems. Your responsibilities include owning large portions of the application from conception through deployment, taking on hard problems in ambiguous environments, and synthesizing product requirements into strong, reliable software components.
Our technical stack includes Python, Django, Celery, and Airflow on the backend; React, Redux, and Mapbox on the frontend; PostgreSQL and Elasticsearch for data storage; machine learning models hosted in Bedrock and SageMaker; and AWS, Pulumi, Terraform, and Kubernetes for infrastructure. You'll work with a team that values empathy, collaboration, and direct engagement with deployment teams and end users to iterate on solutions.
Required qualifications: 8+ years of experience with cross-functional software development teams, a degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience, proven track record shipping and iterating on production-grade software components, ability to write robust, well-tested, well-designed code, solid understanding of distributed systems architecture and scaling, strong modern software development practices, and comfort navigating large codebases. Must be located in Washington, D.C. and open to working in office.
