GitLab is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to lead critical backend systems for vulnerability and dependency management within the Security organization. In this role, you will own large technical deliverables from conception through implementation, designing and developing systems that ingest, store, index, and query security report data. You'll work with PostgreSQL and scalable backend architecture, integrating with third-party security systems while helping GitLab transition from a monolith to modular services.
Key responsibilities include leading complex backend projects across multiple quarters, designing vulnerability management systems with a security-first mindset, and shaping technical patterns for modular service design. You'll remain hands-on with Ruby on Rails and newer services (Go, Rust), while collaborating with product, design, frontend, and engineering teams to influence the technical roadmap. You'll break down complex work, guide other engineers, and communicate technical trade-offs clearly to leadership and peers.
You bring deep experience leading backend projects end-to-end while staying hands-on. You have strong PostgreSQL expertise including query optimization, table design, and write-ahead log management in data-intensive systems. Professional experience with Ruby on Rails, Go, or Python is essential, with comfort working in large monoliths and across multiple languages. You've shaped delivery plans, guided technical decisions, and supported other engineers' work. You're comfortable collaborating across functions, communicating with leaders, and identifying constraints to move work forward. Experience with security tooling, vulnerability management products, or large-scale data systems is valued. You fluently use AI tools to improve delivery while maintaining sound engineering judgment.
