As a Staff Software Engineer, you will lead team-level technical strategy and execution on multi-quarter time horizons. You'll use AI to build, optimize, and maintain software systems that analyze billions of medical records to rank healthcare providers across the country. Your responsibilities include upleveling engineers across the organization by raising the technical bar, collaborating across disciplines to understand the domain and iterate on projects, and protecting user privacy and security through best practices.
Garner's Engineering team tackles incredibly hard technical problems. The company is an AWS + Kubernetes shop and constantly introduces new technologies as system load doubles every year. Engineers are expected to champion cutting-edge industry practices and aggressively embrace AI in every facet of operations. The tech stack includes Claude Code, Kubernetes, AWS, Airflow, DBT, Python, TypeScript, React, and Go.
The role is based in the New York City office (Financial District) with a hybrid arrangement requiring 3 days per week in-office on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. You'll work on problems that matter at the intersection of AI and systemic healthcare reform, with real ownership and autonomy alongside exceptional, principles-based people.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 6+ years of software engineering experience
- Experience leading teams of engineers with demonstrated impact on technical strategy
- Generalist software engineering mindset ready to learn new languages, frameworks, and techniques in a fast-paced startup environment
- Demonstrated ability to build complex systems using AI coding agents (specifically Claude Code)
- Ability to learn quickly and mentor others
- Familiarity with data security and HIPAA compliance
- Desire to be part of a high-performing, mission-driven team that operates with intense urgency, strong individual accountability, and commitment to authentic feedback
