This Staff Software Engineer role is team-agnostic at hire—placement depends on where your strengths create the most leverage. You may own the CI pipeline experience, deploy and release tooling, notification infrastructure, monetization flows, AI agent surfaces, or the foundational web platform. Across all domains, the through line is full-stack ownership, high craft standards, and work that directly shapes how tens of thousands of developers experience CircleCI daily.
Key responsibilities:
- Build AI-natively: approach and solve problems with AI as the default starting point, not a productivity layer.
- Own technical strategy for your domain: decide when and how architecture evolves, balance technical debt against velocity, and break down ambiguity on cross-team projects.
- Invent new interfaces: define what tools developers use to understand, trust, and act on autonomous pipelines and AI-generated fixes.
- Own the full stack at scale: build features end-to-end in Go, React, and TypeScript; extend ownership beyond your code to surrounding systems and teams.
- Connect engineering to business: partner with Product and Engineering Management to translate business goals into technical strategy and make informed tradeoffs.
- Champion observability: drive monitoring and alerting strategy across your domain using tools like Honeycomb, Datadog, and Rollbar.
- Mentor at scale: mentor multiple engineers, build systems and documentation that transfer knowledge and eliminate single points of failure.
Requirements:
- 8+ years of production full-stack engineering experience with a track record of shipping at scale and taking accountability for outcomes.
- AI-native engineering practices: daily use of AI tools with concrete examples of what you've built, how they changed your approach, and where they fall short.
- Full-stack depth: strong across React and TypeScript (frontend), Go (backend), API design, data modeling, and service integration.
- System design expertise across domains: own architecture decisions spanning multiple systems and teams; make tradeoff calls, document reasoning, and serve as escalation point for ambiguous decisions.
- Business acumen: understand how your domain connects to broader business strategy and use that context to guide technical decisions.
- Technical leadership: mentor engineers, give direct feedback on technical direction, raise quality bar through code reviews and design discussions.
