Carta is a connected platform and AI-native ecosystem for private capital, serving 55,000 companies and 1.8M+ equity holders across 160+ countries. The company provides software, services, and legal infrastructure for founders managing equity, fund managers running administration and reporting, and legal teams closing transactions. As a Staff Software Engineer, you will serve as a technical anchor for Carta's business, taking long-term accountability for technical health and strategic direction across key domains. Rather than joining a specific team immediately, you'll enter a pooled hiring model focused on your core technical strengths, with team matching occurring later based on your expertise and career interests. You'll influence strategic areas including the Platform Data Ecosystem (ensuring single source of truth for private market data), Financial Systems Architecture (designing resilient solutions for management fee accounting and multi-currency transactions), and Engineering Excellence (defining company-wide standards to reduce operational load and improve developer velocity). Key responsibilities include navigating ambiguous, complex problems and breaking them into navigable paths for the organization; identifying and eliminating failure patterns across systems through architectural improvements; bridging technical gaps across multiple teams; leading the charge in defining how AI tools are safely and effectively leveraged across the organization; and mentoring senior engineers to raise collective engineering craft. You should have 10+ years of professional software engineering experience with a track record of high-level technical leadership. Expertise in distributed systems is essential. While the primary stack is Python/Django, React, and Postgres, you should be comfortable guiding technical direction across JVM languages, gRPC, and cloud-native infrastructure (AWS). You lead through influence rather than authority, anticipate future roadblocks, and build systems supporting long-term business growth.
