Zscaler is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join its AI Security team in San Jose. You will take ownership of complex engineering challenges in building security products that enable organizations to adopt AI applications and agents safely and at scale.
In this role, you will define technical direction and architecture for major product areas, lead high-impact initiatives spanning multiple teams and system boundaries, and turn ambiguous product and security challenges into clear, executable engineering strategies. You will establish standards for secure, reliable, scalable, and maintainable systems, identify systemic risks and architectural gaps, and drive investments needed for long-term growth.
You are expected to thrive in ambiguity, act as an owner with a bias for action, and seamlessly navigate between high-level strategy and hands-on execution. You will remain deeply technical—coding, prototyping, conducting design reviews, and debugging complex systems. You build strong relationships through clear feedback and commitment to team success, and you are driven by innovation and solving technical challenges at the cutting edge of AI security.
Minimum qualifications include 5+ years of software engineering experience with technical leadership across complex production systems. You must have strong proficiency in Go, Rust, and Python, with deep expertise in systems engineering, security engineering, and backend platforms. You should have demonstrated experience architecting and evolving platforms spanning multiple teams or product areas, and a deep understanding of concurrency, networking, storage, APIs, data systems, and cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP, or Azure). Demonstrated curiosity and active exploration of AI tools is required.
Preferred qualifications include experience building enterprise security, endpoint, cloud, or infrastructure products; familiarity with AI/ML systems, analytics platforms, or AI security; and experience helping a startup or high-growth product evolve into a scalable engineering organization.
