Oura is seeking a Staff Sensor Lead for Emerging Technologies to drive the architecture, specification, development, and characterization of optical, temperature, motion, and inertial sensing systems for next-generation wearable products. This role combines deep technical execution with cross-functional influence, directly impacting Oura's sensor roadmap and long-term platform strategy.
You will prototype, incubate, and evolve motion and inertial sensor architectures (optical sensors, accelerometers, gyroscopes, IMUs, temperature sensors) for novel low-power wearable platforms. You'll translate sensing requirements into robust hardware specifications aligned with product goals and lead integration of all sensors into Oura's new hardware, ensuring calibration, noise management, power efficiency, and high-quality signal acquisition.
Key responsibilities include designing and executing sensor characterization and validation tests from prototype through production; collaborating with firmware, algorithm, and systems teams to ensure accurate motion data feeds into Oura's signal processing and machine learning stacks; developing and maintaining rigorous test methodologies, metrics, and automation frameworks for motion sensor performance evaluation; and engaging with sensor vendors, partners, and manufacturers to assess technology options and optimize integration into mass-production workflows.
You'll analyze sensor data to diagnose edge cases and performance bottlenecks, produce clear technical documentation of sensor designs and trade studies, and present findings to engineering leadership and cross-disciplinary stakeholders. The role reports to the Director of Hardware Sensing and is based in the San Francisco office.
Required qualifications include 10+ years of experience in motion sensing, inertial measurement systems, or similar sensor design and integration roles; hands-on experience with optical, temperature, microphone, accelerometers, gyroscopes, MEMS sensors, and low-power embedded sensor interfaces; strong background in sensor characterization, signal quality analysis, embedded systems, and data integrity practices; excellent analytical problem-solving and communication skills; and a collaborative mindset with cross-functional hardware, firmware, and analytics team experience.
