Anthropic is seeking a Staff Physical Security Systems Engineer to design and specify physical security systems for its data center footprint. This is a foundational role that owns Anthropic's physical security reference design package and ensures all sites meet rigorous security standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and specify physical security systems including perimeter barriers, vehicle mitigation, intrusion detection, video surveillance, security lighting, and site penetration protection
- Produce vendor-ready design packages with performance specifications, reference drawings, device schedules, and test procedures
- Define per-site engineering basis by assessing risk profiles and threat models, establishing compensating controls and documented deviations where needed
- Write acceptance criteria and testable performance requirements with clear verification methods
- Set standoff, structural hardening, and site layout criteria tied to threat assessments
- Conduct field verification including commissioning, acceptance testing, photometric measurements, and video quality checks
- Define operational and design requirements for security operations control rooms (console layout, network, power, backup, resilient communications)
- Own control room acceptance testing and reject systems that fail to meet criteria
- Work with design firms, integrators, vendors, and internal teams (design, construction, real estate, platform engineers)
- Participate in on-call rotation for critical services
- Regular travel to data center sites required
The role involves designing systems from threat basis rather than product catalogs, reviewing construction documents at each stage with actionable redlines, and ensuring delivered systems perform as specified. You will use Claude throughout your engineering workflow.
Requirements:
- Designed or specified physical security systems (perimeter barriers, intrusion detection, video, security lighting) for campus-scale sites with multiple buildings and many detection zones
- Proficiency reading and producing construction documents (site plans, civil/electrical drawings, device schedules, submittals) using AutoCAD, Revit, Bluebeam, or equivalent
- Ability to write testable performance requirements that state what must be true, how it will be verified, and what evidence demonstrates compliance
- Experience running commissioning and acceptance tests against performance criteria and rejecting non-compliant work
- Ability to derive requirements from threat basis and identify weakest points in security designs
- Owned an engineering domain where you set approach, chose site-specific applications, worked directly with vendors, and answered for results
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and professional experience in a field relevant to the role
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience carrying physical security designs from construction documents through construction to acceptance testing
- Experience engineering security scope for colocation or partner-delivered facilities
- Knowledge of published standards for standoff, hostile vehicle mitigation, and intrusion detection zoning
- Photometric and video quality measurement experience
- Control room, AV, or network design experience
- Experience using AI-assisted tooling for drafting and review as core workflow
