IonQ is seeking a Staff Scientist in Materials Science to join the Computational Sciences team within Applications R&D. This newly formed group focuses on general physics problems in condensed matter and high energy physics alongside combinatorial optimization. You will bring dedicated condensed matter and high energy physics expertise to the team, working on problems that span both classical simulation and fault-tolerant quantum computing.
The role sits at the intersection of traditional classical high-performance computing and quantum computing. IonQ is looking for a scientist who understands both approaches deeply and can make informed judgments about where each method is most effective. You will work independently toward defined goals, taking ownership of scientific direction and helping shape how IonQ tackles real-world scientific problems as the company scales its quantum computing capabilities.
You will contribute to IonQ's mission to deliver integrated quantum solutions across computing, networking, sensing, and security. The company's latest systems (IonQ Tempo and IonQ Forte Enterprise) have achieved 99.99% two-qubit gate fidelity, setting world records in quantum computing performance. IonQ is accelerating its technology roadmap to deliver 2 million qubits by 2030, with applications in drug discovery, materials science, financial modeling, logistics, cybersecurity, and defense.
The position is based in Bothell, WA with a hybrid working model and up to 5% travel. This is an opportunity to work on cutting-edge quantum physics and computational science at a publicly traded company (NYSE: IONQ) with major partnerships including Amazon Web Services, AstraZeneca, and NVIDIA.
