Graphcore, a leading AI compute innovator and member of the SoftBank Group, is seeking a Staff Robotics Engineer to provide technical leadership for the design, integration, validation, and deployment of robotic automation systems for data center operations. Reporting to the Director of Automation, you will work across internal Graphcore teams, SoftBank Robotics, SoftBank Group affiliates, and external technology partners to translate R&D concepts into scalable, production-ready robotic capabilities.
You will operate with high autonomy, defining technical direction for complex robotics automation challenges, influencing partner roadmaps, and establishing engineering standards for scalable deployment. Responsibilities include aligning robotics, data center, and internal engineering teams to deliver autonomy capabilities; guiding and mentoring SoftBank Group engineers and third-party partners without direct people management; contributing to technical planning and project milestone delivery; and establishing verification and validation processes including simulation, hardware-in-the-loop testing, FAT/SAT, and field deployment.
You will support troubleshooting across software, controls, mechanical, and electrical systems; iterate on end effectors and robotic subsystems; help build scalable software infrastructure and fleet coordination protocols; and lead the transition of R&D feasibility studies into production-integrated systems. The role requires evaluating emerging technologies to improve capabilities and productivity, producing clear technical documentation, and communicating engineering decisions to diverse stakeholders. Example systems may include robotic manipulation, material transport, inspection, rack/server handling, and autonomous mobile robots for data center operations.
Required qualifications include 8+ years in automation or equipment engineering with focus on mechatronic subsystems; proven experience taking robotic systems from prototype to production or field deployment; expertise with material handling and productionized robotic solutions; familiarity with 3D localization and VLM-based object detection; experience conducting FAT/SAT validation; full-stack debugging capability (PLC logic, C#/Python, mechanical/electrical hardware); proficiency with ROS/ROS 2 and IsaacSIM; strong robotics fundamentals in perception, localization, mapping, planning, and control; and ability to lead technical initiatives through expertise and collaboration. A degree in Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Robotics, or Mathematics is required. The role is based in Austin with periodic travel to partner, manufacturing, lab, and deployment sites, including occasional APAC time zone collaboration.
