Vitable Health is building a health benefits platform designed to make high-quality healthcare accessible to the 85+ million uninsured and underinsured Americans. The company enables employers to offer real, meaningful coverage to their teams—particularly workers in service industries like retail, transportation, and construction.
As Staff Product Engineer for the API Platform, you will lead the design, development, and operation of Vitable's Benefits Partner API Platform. This platform is the critical infrastructure that enables employers, brokers, benefits administrators, payroll providers, and strategic partners to integrate directly with Vitable's benefits infrastructure.
You will own end-to-end platform development across eligibility, enrollment, employee and dependent management, benefit access, billing data flows, reporting, and partner-facing operational automation. Your responsibilities include:
- Designing and building reliable, secure, intuitive APIs with strong conventions around authentication, authorization, versioning, and backward compatibility
- Creating world-class developer experience through documentation, sandbox environments, API key management, integration guides, and testing tools
- Leading complex projects from problem definition through technical design, implementation, production launch, and ongoing operation
- Building internal tools and automation that reduce manual implementation effort and scale partner operations
- Working cross-functionally with product, operations, customer success, sales, implementation, and business teams to understand partner needs and translate them into pragmatic technical solutions
- Establishing architectural decisions that balance speed, reliability, security, compliance, maintainability, and customer impact
- Developing systems with strong guarantees around correctness, idempotency, auditability, observability, and failure recovery
- Contributing across the stack (primarily backend, but frontend and internal tooling as needed) to deliver complete product outcomes
- Mentoring other engineers and championing engineering best practices
Required: 5+ years professional software engineering experience, proven track record designing and operating production APIs or integration platforms used by external customers or partners, experience building production systems where reliability and security are critical, ability to independently lead complex projects with measurable impact, strong problem-solving and ownership mindset, cross-functional collaboration experience, and strong product judgment.
Required technical skills: Strong Python proficiency, deep understanding of backend system design, software architecture, APIs, data modeling, and distributed systems fundamentals, and knowledge of API platform best practices including authentication, authorization, rate limiting, and versioning.
Plus factors: Startup or high-growth company experience, and experience in healthcare, benefits administration, insurance, HR tech, payroll, fintech, or other regulated/integration-heavy domains.
